The Dark Rum Mojito Is More Than Just A Brunch Drink

The Mojito is a traditional Cuban highball, but the Dark Rum Mojito variation offers a richer, deeper flavor profile. By replacing the traditional white rum with an aged or dark rum, the cocktail gains notes of molasses, oak, caramel, and spice, providing a more complex base for the muddled mint and fresh lime. This version retains the refreshing, effervescent, and vibrant qualities of the original while adding a layer of warmth and complexity that is perfect for sipping.

Dark Rum Mojito Ingredients

  • 2 oz Dark Rum (Aged or Blackstrap)
  • 3/4 oz Simple Syrup (1:1)
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 8-10 Mint Leaves
  • Soda Water (to top)

How to Make a Dark Rum Mojito

  1. Place the mint leaves, lime juice, and simple syrup in a chilled highball or Collins glass.
  2. Gently muddle the mint leaves to release their oils.
  3. Add the dark rum and fill the glass with crushed ice or cubed ice.
  4. Top with soda water and gently stir to combine the ingredients.
  5. Garnish with a large mint sprig, making sure to spank it gently to release its aroma.

It is crucial to gently muddle the mint; over-muddling releases bitter chlorophyll. Using crushed ice is traditional, as it helps incorporate the mint and provides maximum chill and dilution.

Dark Rum Mojito Riff

For a tropical upgrade, replace half of the simple syrup (3/8 oz) with rich demerara syrup for deeper molasses notes.
