How The Carajillo Replaced The Espresso Martini As The Summer's Buzziest Cocktail

The Espresso Martini has long ruled summer happy hours thanks to its titillating combination of caffeine and alcohol. Its reign, however, has come to an end. The Carajillo, once a hidden gem in Spain and Mexico, is being hailed this season as the new monarch of coffee-adjacent cocktails on food, liquor, and cocktail blogs. Built around the Spanish liqueur Licor 43, it delivers a similar buzz to its predecessor but with a lower ABV and no additional sweeteners, making it a lighter and, dare we say, healthier alternative. And with just two ingredients, it's easy to see what this summer's buzziest cocktail is all about for yourself.

Carajillo Ingredients

  • 2 oz Licor 43 (or other Spanish Vanilla Liqueur)
  • 2 oz Chilled Espresso
  • Ice
  • Coffee Beans (for garnish)

How to Make a Carajillo

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add the Licor 43 and  espresso.
  3. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds, or until the shaker is frosty.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with coffee beans and serve.

The shake is key. The vigorous action is what creates the foam on top of the drink. Since there are only two ingredients, the quality of your espresso and Licor 43 makes a huge difference.

Carajillo Riff

For a richer, more spirit-forward version, try swapping the Licor 43 for a spiced rum or a quality tequila. To add a smoky twist, use a small amount of mezcal in the shaker along with the other ingredients. You can also experiment with different garnishes, such as a cinnamon stick for added aroma.
