Heaven Hill Phoenix Bourbon Marks 30th Anniversary Of 1996 Distillery Fire

Heaven Hill Distillery has announced the release of Heaven Hill Phoenix, a limited-edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey commemorating the 30th anniversary of the devastating fire that destroyed its original Bardstown distillery in 1996. Bottled at 107 proof, the whiskey includes 30-year-old bourbon distilled at the very same facility destroyed in the fire.

What We Know About Heaven Hill Phoenix Bourbon

The foundation of Heaven Hill Phoenix is an 18-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon distilled in March 2008 and aged in heavily charred oak barrels. Blended into that whiskey is a quantity of 30-year-old bourbon produced at the original Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery, making Phoenix a rare opportunity to taste whiskey from the facility that was lost three decades ago.

“Heaven Hill Phoenix balances the mature oak and length of its 30-year-old component with the structure of 18-year-old Bourbon aged in heavy-char oak,” said Heaven Hill Master Distiller Conor O'Driscoll.

According to the distillery, Phoenix offers aromas of oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramel, followed by butterscotch, baked apple and spice on the palate. The finish features lingering apple pie notes and peppery warmth.

The 750 ml bottle comes in a commemorative gift carton decorated with a phoenix and the inscription “Remember. Rebuild. Rise.”

Remembering The 1996 Heaven Hill Fire

On November 7, 1996, a fire broke out at Heaven Hill's Bardstown facility during a powerful storm. Fueled by winds approaching 70 mph, the blaze spread rapidly through the property, destroying seven aging warehouses and the original Heaven Hill Springs Distillery. Approximately 92,000 barrels of whiskey were lost, with damages estimated at $30 million.
